We have Calcutta papers to the 23rd of July brought by the Ardville. They contain little to throw lighten the progress of the war. Their silence, however, is an indication that no new disasters had happened. The following extracts are from the ' Calcutta Englishman ':— " Service Message from "the Resident Magistrate at Sasserain, dated July 21. " The grand trunk road between Jchaimbad and Kurrumnassa is closed. The detachment formerly at Ajnabad has been ordered back to protect the suspension bridge at Jehanabad. A detachment of her Majesty's 73rd is halted.

" Government have sanctioned a 'handsome reward tn the 40th N. 1., for shooting the gaol prisoners who attempted to set lire to the bungalows at Nagoda. " We hear that the Supreme Council have ordered the reduction of the salary of the officiating collector and salt agent of the 24 Purgunnahs from Co.'s rs. 28,060 to Co.'s is. 23,000. " Government have granted to the Seikh Sirdars the sum Co.'s rs. 1700, expended on the funeral ceremony of the late Ituja Shere Sing, at Benares. [ " A levy has been raised at Chutturpore, for dispersing rebels near Chelatura Ohat, and Captain Griffin appointed to command them. " A sale committee of the Calcutta Tract and Book Society has been formed for the purpose of supplying our brave soldiers with books and periodicals. The committee will feel obliged if those who are willing to c< operate with them will give them information as to the speediest, safest, and most economical way of sending books, &c. to military stations. Communications can be addressed to Messrs. M. Wylie and R. B. Chapman, and to the Rev. C. B. Lewis, Secretary to the Tract Society."
