WHEREAS I, William Sefton Moorhotjse, Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, did, in pursuance of. the powers vested in me, prorogue the Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury on the 24th day of. February, ISSS, and the I said Provincial Council, did stand prorogued acj cordingly till the 3rd day of September, ISSS; and whereas it is expedient that the Session of the said Provincial Council shall be further prorogued :— Now, therefore, I, in pursuance of the powers vested in me. do hereby further prorogue the said Provincial Council, and Summon .the.same for despatch of business on FRlDAY*'the Istday of October, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight. TTTHEREAS a Writ under the hand TT of William Sefton Moor_6use> Esquire, Superintendent of the !above pro--yince, bearing date the sixteenth day of Sept.> in the V"ear of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-eight, hath been directed to pie, Robert Latter, Esq., as Returning Officer for-the Town of Lyttelton, requiring arid commanding me to cause to be elected by the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner and form by law prescribed, one legally qualified person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Town of Lyttelton, in the room of Robert Waitt, resigned. Now, therefore, I, the said Robert Latter, Esquire, Returning Officer for the said Town of Lyttelton, do hereby, in pursuance of the said recited writ, give notice that a public meeting of the electors of the said Town of Lyttelton will be holden at the Town Hall, Lyttelton, on WEDNESDAl r, the 6th day of October Nest, at Noon, for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the said Town of Lyttelton, and in the event of a poll being demanded for the candidates or any of them,°such polling shall take place on Thursday, the 7th day of October next, at the Court House, at Lyttelton. Congreve having resigned, and understanding that your recommendation of his successor-will be approved by the Government, I beg to offer myself as a candidate for the appointment of Scab Inspector for the Province. GENTLEMEN,— Had I received a timely intimation of the vacancy which ha? just occurred in the Avon Electoral District, in consequence of Mr. Woodford's resignation of his seat in the Provincial Council, I should have offered myself to your notice as his successor. As I now find there are already two candidates in the field, and that a majority of your votes are pledged, I shall not on the present occasion solicit your suffrages; but whenever an opportunity may again present itself, 1 shall venture to obtrude myself upon your notice, and I trust that a residence of six years in the settlement, combined with a personal and practical acquaintance with its agricultural and pastoral interests will acquit me of any undue presumption in seeking the honor of becoming one of your representatives.
