It was unanimously resolved, on the report of the Examiners, not to fill up at the present election the higher of the two scholarships offered tor -competition (£6O per annum), but the second (£4O per annum) was awarded to Alfred Thompson, aged 15, a pupil of Christ s College •Grammar School, and third son -of. The Provincial Council will meet for its 10th •session on Friday next, October the 13th, at the "Town Hall, Christchurch, as announced, but we understand that an .adjournment for a week will almost immediately take place. The prisoner Ronnage, whose futile efforts to live a savage life under English law we have occasionally before had to chronicle, made another attempt to escape on Saturday, afternoon last. The hard labour gang were at work on Norwich Quay under the care of two policeconstables. One of them having gone with a prisoner to the rear, Ronnage, imagining the other to be fully occupied with the body of the gang, took the opportunity to bolt among the houses, and managed to get into that one occupied by Mrs. Allen, between London Street and "the Quay, where he locked himself into an inner room. The constable'on duty was however close at his heels, and there were also several persons on the Quay witnesses of the occurrence, one of whom, Mr. Grubb, joined actively in the recapture. Ronnage being summoned reluctantly ..surrendered, and was led off, but indulged himself in an explosion of bad language against his conductors and others on the way up to the gaol. This silly effort at freedom has of course "resulted in closer confinement.

It will be seen by an advertisement in our columns to-day that the Government have adopted the plan of publishing all tenders sent ■in, specifying those accepted or rejected. By this means the public will be assured of the straightforwardness of all operations on the part of the tenderers, the. contractors, and the Government.

The N.W. gale which has been blowing for the last few days has covered the towns with -dust, and has slightly affected the passage at the Waimakariri Ferry. On the other hand, the bar of that river has evidently been broken through by the fresh, so that the navigation, lately a difficult, will now be set right again.
