The width of the River is 1290 feet from bank to bank. The ground on each side of the River is flat for some distance, and the banks are on a level with the line of the highestfreshes. The ordinary water line is eight feet, and the deepest part of the channel twelve feet below the banks. The bottom of the Itiver is a shifting bed of shingle at a depth of from four to twelve feet below the banks, resting on clay at a further depth of four feet and upwards.
