i The * Melbourne Argus'quotes the following paragraphs from the, '.Hobarton Courier/ of the7th,uit., eight days later than our dates direct from Tasmania:—

| We'rejoice to learn that the timely remonstrance of the hon. the colonial secretary on the part of the present government to the authorities connected with the convict department, in respect to the burden of. police and gaols being wholly thrown on the colony l>y the withdrawal of the contribution of the honie government, has resulted in the British Government continuing their.aid to the amount,of „£6OOO yearly. It Cannot but be satisfactory' to feel that the claim of the coloriy has been acknowledged to this extent. ' We understand, however, that the concession was,made irrespective of the resolution of parliament .\ on the question, which, we may hope, will obtain.for the colony a more complete measure of justice. ' j Upon the application of the Mayor of Hobart (Town, on the part of the citizens, through the government, for two of. the guns captured, in the ißussian war,'the Secretary of, State applied to pHajor-General Peel, who has informed him that. jlie has ordered two of these guns to^ be handsomely mounted,. with; ai view, to thfeir being pr,e-, isented to the colony oh her Majesty's behalf.
