AUCKLAND.
The following paragraphs of Auckland news we extract from the 'New Zealander,' of the 21st ult.:—
The Testimonial to Col. WrxYAiux—-The subscription list to the proposed testimonial to this gentleman, who has filled so many offices, both military and civil, in this colony—and filled them so worthily,—is rapidly- increasing, and we are glad to see among the names of subscribers, not only those opposing local politicians | and old settlers, but of his Excellency the Governor, and of others who have settled among us more recently. Our opinion of the manner in which Col. "Wynyard has discharged the varied duties that have devolved upon him during- his residence in this colony, is so well known that we shall say nothing at present in support, of the testimonial. The people of Auckland need no arguments from us to make up their minds whether such a testimonial isdeserved or not. But we cannot forget that we are also about to lose the " sSth" as a body; and we are glad that not merely its gallant Colonel, but the Heginient as a Beginient, will carry with it some lasting token of long and friendly connexion that has subsisted between " the 58th" and New Zealand —and between it and the Province of Auckland in partielar. " Peace hath its victories no less than war j" and without regarding our old defenders as more perfect than mortals, we doubt if any regiment can be named which has remained in one spot for so many years, and has more truly earned the respect of the inhabitants, than the officers and the men of the 58th have gained that of the people of Auckland. We are glad, therefore, to hear that both the officers and non-commissioned officers'" mess will have something offered for acceptance which shall bear testimony to the long service' of the sSth in New Zealand, arid to the friendly relations which have subsisted between them^ and the civilian settlers of the most distant of the British colonies.
The Auckland Jewish Synagogue.—This neat edifice for the worship of God, in aceord--ance with the faith and ceremonial of the ancient Jewish Church, was solemnly dedicated on Wednesday evening last, when, in additions to the regular congregation, there were present members of various denominations of the Christian Church. The service was very impres--sively performed, and those auditors who had never before heard the inspired songs- of the' Psalmist chanted to the strains that have been handed down from his day, with the responsive
" Hallelujah" and " Seiah," were much struck with the singularly solemn fervour which canbe given utterance to them in the Hebrew tongue, with the aid of Hebrew music. I-luxua Coal.—Mr. W. J. Young of Druryv has brought us an excellent sample of out-crop-* ping lignite coal very, ranch resembling t-har, from Taupiri, in the Waikato, which was found the other day in a part of the Hunua. Block, within a mile and a-half of Slippery Creek, and within the same distance of water-carriage available tor vessels.of 25 tons. It is hi many respects the best sample we have yet seen as indicating the presence of good bituminous cmt bslow the surface, and it appears to be free front sulphur. Mr. Pollock, who resides clotse by> will be happy to show the spot whence it wasgot to any visitor. A sample of two or three' tons ought to be obtained for trial by tiie " White' S-.van," on her next trip.
