The Chieftain, for Nelson and Canterbury, was to leave London in May. The "Leviathan."—A meeting of the shareholders of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company was held on the 19 th April, Mr. Hope presidiug, when the report was adopted, and the resolution passed authorising the directors to raise £220,000, of which £100,000 was sanctioned at the meeting in July, in such manner as they think fit, including the power to re-issue the forfeited shares. It was stated that by the specifications and tenders procured it will require about £172,000 to equip the Leviathan for sea, that the liabilities amount to £91,282, inclusive of £50,000, for temporary loans, for which the directors are responsible, and that the available assets are estimated at £52.000. The amount actually required is thus—£2ll^2B2, or, with the addition of £8718 for contingencies, £220,000. The total cost of the vessel will consequently be £804,522, being at the rate of about £35 per ton, taking her capacity at about 24,000 tons. The Board consider the preliminary voyages to America will prove profitable, and enable the ship to be satisfactorily tested without expense. Stress is laid upon the preference she will command over other vessels from her great capacity and speed, and upon her value to the Government under circumstances similar to the late-events in India. It is not expected that she will be completed before autumn, when her preliminary trips will be performed, prior to the opening of the early spring trade of next year.—- Times.
