Sib, —Tour contemporary the 'Canterbury Standard' has Just hit the cause of my intruding upon him a letter iv l'eply to some remarks made by you in reference to the " Vote by Ballot." j. [

It is gratifying to learn that there is no such mean, petty, and unfair rivalry between the two local papers of Canterbury,—as exists here, in Wellington. The exhibition of partisan feeling ! here, is such, and the indisposition to publish anything calling in question the editorial-wis-dom or party views of our two local papers is so strong, that I uncharitably was led to think that you might be equally iudisposed to insert in your paper a letter controverting your own 'views. The letter in question is not quite a "verbatim copy" of one which appeared in the 'Wellington Independent*; it is, in my judgment, a ! much better letter, containing matter also which the other did not. . It perhaps is "out of question" to suppose that you would now publish that lelter even if the ' Canterbury Standard' should be willing to , allow you to have it. But the. " Ballot" ques- j tion, either way, is a veryimportant one; while j the very considerable difference of opinion upon the matter, declares that the question requires a great deal more discussing and "ventilation."
