THE SEAT OF GOVERNMENT.
From what we can perceive in the proceedings of the Legislature, it seems that some of the southern members are giving in their adhesion to the views of the northern members, in regard to the permount position of the seat of Government. During the discussion on a bill to,extend the time within which the; Governor is required to signify his pleasure on bills passed by Provincial Councils, and reserved by Superintendents, Mr. Packer said he "had no desire to see the seat of Government changed, because for various reasons he considered Auckland the most suitable place for it." The ' New Zealander' says, although we cannot discover on what occasion, that Mr. Ollivier had expressed similar convictions. The same journal is serenely confident in its predictions of further converts, as may be seen from the following remarks on the 12th ulfc., referring to the debate on the Disqualification Bill:— In the course of the discussion, the representative retrievers put up two or three sporting arguments, and hunted them to earth. We can only notice one—that members of Provincial Councils, ought not to be members of the House of Representatives. The parties who thus argued supported their case very feebly, and after talking in a circle, ended by avowing that, ' in" tlie ' present dearth of competent legislators for the colony, they did not see how the House could be filled without having recourse to Provincial Councillors. Not one seemed to recollect that the matter was one for settlement by the constituents, who, if they think fit, have an , undoubted right—even if it be not at all times expedient—to send up the entire Executive of a province, with Superintendent to boot. Canterbury is doing so this session, and even more. Already we have in the House of Representatives, the Provincial Secretary of Canterbury, Mr. Ollivier; the Resident Magistrate of Canterbury, Mr. Hall —who, if he continue to hold that office, will take leave of politics at the close of this session—for the word has gone forth that our paid magistracy should no longer

Ihe last-namedgentlemah has on more tnan one occasion evinced an anti-Auckland tendency and a leaning- towards Mr.. Fox's policy. We. ascribe, the aversion; in the one case,, andthe partiality in the other, to the want ol more intimate acquaintance. 'We.'are glad therefore, that Mr: Ward of Lyttelton will see Auckland with his own eyes,-for we believe that iiewill soon arrive at the same opinion with his j colleagues, Messrs. Olliyier and.Packer, that nothing but regular Steam inter-Provincial communication, is. wanted to render 'Auckland all that nature designed her to be as the capital of New Zealand. We have as little doubt what will, be the verdict of the Superintendent of !
