Local Intelligence.
The Provincial Engineer lias been for some days laying down levels preparatory joo the - intended improvements of the streets of Lyttelton._ Many inconveniences might have been obviated if this had been done some years ago; for now many of the inhabitants are getting alarmed at finding their threshholds many feet below the intended level of the streets., We perceive by an advertisement .in' another part of our paper that the first of a series of four dramatic performances is to be given in ■the Town Hall, to-morrow night, by Mr. Cox's company. The pieces consis $f an elegant "petite comedy—" Perfection,"—a sketch farce by Buckstone—" A Kiss in the Dark,"—and the laughable afterpiece ;" The Lottery Ticket." The inmates of'our jail have lately found a new field for their labor in that hitherto much neglected, but interesting locality of Dampier's Bay, and from the increasing number of the inhabitants in the district, and also for its being the most favored promenade of our town folk, the improvements going on in repairing the roads will doubtless prove very acceptable. For a whole month we have had fine, clear and calm weather with the exception of one rainy day,—3oth ult., until yesterday afternoon, when a sudden change commenced, with a strong S.W. gale, accompanied with heavy showers, and temperature down to 400 Par. Ther. As we do not profess any of the prognosticating gifts of the celebrated ' Murphy/ we cannot, of course, determine how long this disagreeable change may continue, but one thing is certain, that if it do so for any great length of time, we may bid farewell to all road improvements .until the weather clears up again. . Messrs. Peacock and Co. are now having transhipped from the Corsair on board the Malay for shipment to Sydney about 15 tons oil and 12 cwt. whalebone, which will leave about four tons of oil still on board the Corsair, making m all for the two last whales caught in a rough estimate, 19 tons of oil. The Corsair is expected to leave port on Thursday next, and oapt. tray seems very sanguine of soon.making fresh captures. The price is estimated at the same rate as the last shipment forwarded to Sydney by Messrs. Peacock and Co. i
