'12p. or' 'thereabouts, and the buildings are constructed ,of substantial materials. 1 All tenders must be in writing, addressed to ithe Provincial Secretary, and must state the , amount the applicant is prepared to give for the > property. If the sum offered in any tender be deemed sufficient by the Government, the premises will be put up to auction, pursuant to the ; Ordinance. 1 Two months notice of the time and place of sale will be given. HIS Honor the Superintendent directs the following Immigration Regulations to be published for general information.' By his Honor's command, ' JOHN OLLIVIER, Provincial Secretary. Provincial Secretary's Office. Christchurch, Dec.: 21,1857. IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS. All persons desirous of obtaining assisted passages-to the Province of .Canterbury in vessels under contract with the Piovincial Government, -may receive assistance as follows: — 1. The Government will affort 1 assistance equal in amount to-tbe sum paid in cash by the passenger. If there shall be any balance, the Government will advance the sum, taking from tbe passenger promissory notes for the amount advanced, payable to the Treasurer of the Province. Such notes will bevinade payable-on demand, but, unless tbe, passenger-dispute- the;debt,. or? shall: attempt . to- leave ithe Province, payment: will only be required in sums of five pounds-* at a time, at .periods of three months, 1 until the whole debt' is discharged. The first payment ,-to .i be made six months after ■ I landing. 2. Any persons resident in the Province desirous of assisting their friends in England, or elsewhere, to obtain assisted passages to tbe Colony may do so by drawing a Bill to tbe order" of tbe provincial Treasurer, accepted by a substantial householder, als~ resident in the Province, to be approved of by tbe Superintendent as suffi- , cient security to the same ; this Bill may then be transmitted to tbe person who is desirous of emigrating to the Colony, and, being by him presented to the Emigration Agent, will be received in lieu of cash payment, as hereinafter provided ; the Bill will be re-transmitted, by tbe Agent to the Colony, and must be paid .-immediately on presentation. i 3. Assisted passages will be afforded only to bond fide labouring men, mechanics, and > female domestic servants; but persons of all classes will be able to assist their friends to emigrate to tbe Colony by undertaking the payment of tbe whole of the passage money in the manner above provided, 4. No person will ' owed any assistance unless be shall hay oeen approved of , by tbe Emigration Agent in England. . No ■' single man above tbe age of 40 years, no pei son above the age of 50, unless a member of a large family;., and no person above 60 years, under- any circumstances, will be allowed assistance. 5 When bills are tendered in payment ! as cash in England, tbe amount, of assistance j given by tbe Government will be one-half I ofthe amount iof Bills.: Persons.'therefore wishing to give their friends in England the utmost amount of assistance must give bills for two-thirds of the whole amount of the passage money. 6. The Provincial Government are un-able-at present to state what the rate of passage money to the Colony will be fixed ; buL all bills will be prepared on the supposition that it will amount to £20, should it be less, a proportional "j art of the bills -will be remitted at the time of re-payment. 7.
