The bridge near " the Bricks" at Christchurch, which was carried away some time ago by the swollen river, is to be replaced by another in a more generally convenient situation, connecting Madras street North and South. The Government has given those most interested to understand that if:they will subscribe half the : expense a cart bridge will be built there instead of a mere foot bridge. We have no doubt that those who have property in that direction will be glad to avail themselves of this offer, as the want of a good means of communication has for a long time been felt at the east end of the town. Now that the whole of that portion of the town has been bought by private individuals the Want pf a cart bridge would soon be found a serious inconvenience. The Colombo street bridge is to cost, we believe,, about £360. At.that rate private subscriptions for the Madras street bridge must amount to about £180." We should. recommend an early attention to this matter on the part,of those interested, as fhe sooner they bestir themselves the sooner the bridge will be built. ■
