The Canterbury left Wellington for this port on Sunday the 2ofch ult, and reached to within 40 miles of Port Cooper Heads, when she was driven oack by the gale from the south on. the following nigiit to the .Kaikoras, where she landed two of her passengers,—Capt. Mallock and Mr. Kitson, who had lately arrived by the Montmorency at Wellington. The Canterbury had not the English mail on board, but we" understand it was the intention of Captain Bowton to return to Wellington and wait its arrival there. The Montmorency made the passage to Wellington in 106 days. She was to leave the latter place for this port on the discharge of her Wellington cargo. The Wanderer, from Sydney, for Lyttelton, with stock, was at Wellington when the Canterbury left. There appears to be some hope of the bridge at Kaiapoi being completed. The planking is nowlaid, and some horsemen have crossed it. but much remains to be done in making the approaches, ,which, by-the-way, are on one side through^ private property. A new jetty is in course of construction by private enterprise opposite Mr. BJack's store, intended, we learn, as ■tTi^itHtrtttrrg^.-rre^-tti^-- e^^ cl ._. g ome men have been, engaged the last few days in mariniTg~ out some of the streets in Kaiapoi, preparatory to forming the roads, but the original lines of the streets have not been adhered to, so that the houses and fences will be thrown out of line with the road. There ought to be a good reason for the deviation. *
