Local Intelligence.
The Mary Thomson was on Monday got off the beach where she had been driven by the gale of last week. In spite of the exertions made by Capt. Muiihead, and of the assistance which several vessels in port supplied, no movement had been effected until high water on Monday, at about half-past three o'clock, when a little progress was made, and the Planet steamer, returning at the critical moment from Pigeon Bay, took a warp on board and chucked her off into deep water in a few minutes and with apparent ease. We are glad to learn that the schooner has not received any considerable damage from her stranding. The cause of Mr. Sewell's detention in England (as we .have heard it) is of serious moment ! to us. He had taken his passage by the January mail steamer, when he heard at the last moment that the arrangements which he had made for New Zealand steam communication were nearly upset by the state of the money market. It is to be hoped that he may be able to leave matters in good train by February, so as to arrive in the colony with the mail now due. It is arranged that when the writs for the vacant seats come down from Auckland he will be placed in nomination for the town of Lyttelton, and, of course, returned without opposition. The disallowance of the Waste Lands Act of 1856 by the Imperial Government involves the veto of the Governor on the Land Regulations Amendment Ordinance of this province, which the Council passed last Session in pursuance of that Act. We are privately informed from Auckland that the disallowance has accordingly been notified by his Excellency.
