The last Provincial Gazette announces the appointment of Mr. T. S. Duncan, to the offices of Provincial Solicitor and Crown Prosecutor' vacant by the resignation of Mr. H. B. Gresson. By this appointment a seat in the Provincial Council for Akaroa is vacated. Mr. Duncan stands for re-election; his address will be found in opapresent issue. Tne arrival of the English mail places it out of our power to report as fully as we were otherwise prepared to do the meeting held on Thursday evening in Christchurch to organise a system of collecting subscriptions for the relief of the sufferers by the Indian mutiny. The resolutions adopted, the subcriptions received in the room itself, amounting to upwards of £180, and the general committee appointed, will be found in our advertising columns. . The committee was hastily constructed, and is intended to embrace all districts of the province, and for each a sub-committee will be formed of the residents. All the clergy are placed upon the general committee, and it was understood to be left with them to summon and preside over the sub-committees in their own districts. The first general committee meeting will be held in the Town Hall, Christchurch, on Tuesday next, at 12, noon. The principal speakers at the meeeting were his Honor the Superintendent, the Bishop of Christchurch, the Archdeacon of Akaroa, Messrs. Ollivier, Tancred, and Packer. We very much regret that want of space compels us to defer till our next a full report of the addresses delivered. Mr. Wylde held a sale of Kaiapoi town land belonging to the Church Property Trust estate, on Tuesday last. The proceeds of the sale were considerable. Eighteen quarter acres were set up and sold. One quarter acre fetched £50, ajad others £42 and downwards, averaging £35 18s. 4d. per section, or £131 13s. 4d. per acre, It is worthy of remark that several of the purchasers were labouring men. The royal authority has been given for the betrothal of the Princess of Hohenzollern with the King of Portugal. The ; master of a work-house on the south side of the Thames, with the parishundertaker, is charged with selling the bodies of about 60 paupers to the students of Guy's hospital. The death of Admiral Thomas le March ant Gosselin, senior flag officer on the active list, occurred a few days ago, in his 93rd year. .He served 29 years at sea, during the war.
