The total weight, as shown by the Custom House entries, is 674,829 lbs.; but the greatest portion of this is simply entered on an average of 300 lbs. per bale. Wherever the exact weight of the bales is shown, they are found invariably to exceed 350 lbs; so that one-sixth of the above total weight may be fairly added to it, showing the whole amount to be nearly 800,000 lbs. The loading of the two ships now in harbour is consequently very near completion, the only delay, in fact, occurs in the process of pressing and stowage. The brig. Gertrude is chartered by the General Government to convey members of the General Assembly to Auckland. She is under engagement to leave Otago for Lyttelton on the loth March; and to remain not more than 60 hours at Lyttelton j and thence to proceed direct to Auckland.

The session of the Supreme Court commenced yesterday in Lyttelton. There were ten cases nominally in the calendar; but of these six were against two old comrade convicts; two against f another individual, which were ignored by the Grand Jury; and the two remaining were the only important ones. All but the latter were disposed of yesterday. The little steamer Planet took her first business trip yesterday, and left the jetty for Kaiapoi about ;'a quarter before eight o'clock in the morning, with a full complement of passengers, including ladies as well as gentlemen, although the morning was rainy and dismal,and promised to be, as it turned out, a wet day. The Roehampfcon, long expected, arrived in harbour on Sunday afternoon, the 118 th day from Gravesend. She-put in at the Cape for four days, thus considerably adding to. the length of her passage, but rendering it additionally pleasant to the emigrants on board. Her passengers number equal to 108 adults, but among them are many children. _ All are in perfect health, and neither birth nor death occurred on board. All unite in speaking in the highest terms of Captain Candler and his crew. —By the Henry and Spray a batch of General Government Gazettes have reached us. On February 11, additional instructions from her Majesty to the Governor are published, which are too long for analysis here. The appointment of Captain Alexander Sproul, to be Harbour-master and Pilot at this port, is confirmed. At this and other ports in New Zealand the Landing Waiter is appointed Emigration officer. On February 12, a proclamation above referred to, with respect to the disturbances at Taranaki, is printed in English and Maori. A memorandum from the Horse Guards, on the subject of military precedence, is also published. A third Gazette of the 22nd notifies that Colonel Wynyard, Chief Justice Arney, his Honor Mr.Cutfield,tl\e Superintendent of Taranaki, and Mr. J. Menzies, of Mataura, Otago, are summoned to the Executive Council. Mr. P.' A. Weld and the Hon. ",J. S. Wortley are placed on the Commission of the peace for the Colony of New Zealand. Several names are added to the Commission for the various provinces ; the following for. Canterbury : —Mr. J. C. W. Russell, of flam, and Messrs. John Seager Gundry, Crosbie Ward,' and Robert Latter, of Lyttelton.
