WANGANUI.
(From the Chronicle, Jan. 21.) The Superintendent's late visit to Wanganui has added one more to his.many, previously established claims on our district for energetic support. As soon as possible after hearing of the disastrous effects of the storms of wind and rain which almost entirely swept away the bridges over the Turakina andWangaehu, he came up and concerted with Mr. Roy the best means of repairing the disaster. He succeeded in effecting a contract for rebuilding the Wangaehu bridge on a stronger and improved plan. Not the least unnecessary delay will occur in restoring the Turakina bridge; and, if the funds voted for the road should be insufficient, his Honor will be prepared to propose another vote for the purpose. Although the weather was generally unpropitious, it did not prevent Dr. Featherston from visiting almost every part of the settlement, and making personal acquaintance with many previously I unknown to him. Perhaps there are two or three in the district who may be malcontent ; but it was most cheering to his friends and must have been most gratifying to his Honor to see right hands of fellowship extended to him which ever way he turned.
Mr. Roy has called for tenders for making so much of the Victoria Avenue road as extends frbin where it stop's now to the commencement of the town. Now it is for the Victoria Avenue owners and renters of land or buildings to set about mending their own ways, their contributions being met by an equivalent from the Government.
After some dry and wind)-- weather; rain began to fall on Saturday afternoon, continuing heavily during1 .Sunday and Sunday night, with plenty *on Monday and Monday night. The "Wanganui river rose higher than has been known for niany years —Taupo Quay being in some places impassable. Mr. Roy, we are glad to say, having had &n opportunity of observing the flood, was confirmed in his opinion that the best place for the bridge had been fixed upon, being opposite Victoria Avenue.
