MY Dear Sir, —I beg to acknowledge the receipt this day of a Requisition, signed by yourself and several other gentlemen, in which I am asked to become a Candidate for the Representation: of the Town of Lyttelton in the Hoube of Representatives. , ;I assure you I-feel greatly flattered by such a. mark of confidence, and X much regret my inability to show--how highly I esteem it by acceding without hesitation to the Requisition. I But lam unable to do so. I hardly suppose it ' I can interest the gentlemen signing the Requi- | sition to know the reasons which compel me to 1 decline the honour they would confer ©n me; but as it might appear -like indifference to the compliment were I not to" do so, I may state that they arise out of my private affairs. ; I am not yet able to absent myself from the various occupations in which-I am engaged. Were it otherwise I should feel pleased in placing my services at the command of my fellow-colonists. And I can assure you there is no constituency I should think it a greater honour to represent than that of Lyttelton. - May I request you-to communicate this answer to the gentlemen signing the Requisition, and believe rrie to remain, ■ My dear Sir;: : - . , , . Your's-very sincerely, j JOSEPH BEITTAN. Linwood, Jan. 20, 1858'
