Markets.

Mr. A. J. Alport held a sale of Kauri timber, boards, scantling^-palings, and shingles, lately imported from Auckland, at Peacock's wharf, on Wednesday last.. The sale was well attended, and the prices realised were very good, finch boardu averaged 29a. per 100 ft., but 'some lota reached 325.; I^-inch boards went at 285.; inch at 29* j |-inch at 28s. • 9x2 quartering, fttched 275.; Bx4, 27«.; 8x 3, 265.; 6x2, from 245. to 28s. ; 6 x 1, 275. to 315.; 4 x 3,215. to 28a. A large quantity of 5 ft. palings was knocked down at 255.; 6 ft. ditto at 26 3 . and 275. p e r 100, Shingles fetched 265. per 1000.

A striking iiistauce of the rine in the price of

land in the settlement has occurred during tlie past week. A plot of 20 acres of rural land, adjoining the town belt,.which was purchased four years ago for £40,' ha s; been now sold for £1000. Similar cases could be cited from time to time.

The prices of mutton and beef were advanced Id. per lb. by the' Christchurch butchers on Saturday. Mutton is now quoted at sd. to 7a\, and beef at 6d. to Bd. ' The rise in mutton may be attributed to the high price iof wool; and that in beef is made to correspond, not without reason. This is a very different state of things from the ' bo:.ling down' which, it was anticipated, would come about this time. ' .'
