The Lyttelton Times. Saturday, December 26.

By the Wonga Wonga we have papers from the Northern Provincei of later dates than we had previously received. We have not time nor room to put the news thus received in its proper place, and must defer extracts to our next isstie.

From Wellington our latest papers are of the 19th instant. A requisition with 158 signatures was presented to Mr. St. Hill on the Bth instant, to allow himself to be put in nomination for the office of Superintendent. Mr. St. Hill, in his reply of the same day, places his services at their disposal. Formal notice has been served upon the Superintendent and subordinate officers warning them against the payment of any sums out of the Provincial chest after the end of this year, when the provisions of the Appropriation Act cease. This notice has been signed by six electors, served," and published in the newspapers. The legal effect of this .proceeding is not quite clears- ■•-_■ - . , Mr. Armstrong, -a Wellington saddler, has presented Mr. E. J. Wakefield with a gold mounted whip in token of his victory over jice bull-dogs at a public meeting held two years ago. The ' Spectator' advocates a dissolution of the Assembly on the ground chiefly that Wellington will be misrepresented by five out of its seven members; a meeting was held and a petition adopted in favour of the suggestion.

The Wanganui Races took place on the 3th and 9th inst. The sport throughout was good, and the attendance numerous. Mr. St. Hill's Meleager,, and Captain Turners Namu won two races each, and there was fair competition for the rest of the prizes. The meeting is called by the 1 Chronicle' most satisfactory and creditable. •

From Nelson we have no important news; the weather on the diggings' was still wet, and not much progress had been made. A large theatrical company had arrived from Sj'dney. Notice is given in the General Government Gazette that the names of all officiating clergymen must be forwarded to the Registrar General, Auckland, before the end of this month, in pursuance of the Marriage Act.
