Local Intelligence.
The ' Wellington Independent' of Nov. 11th, states its belief that a report that Justice Wakefield had resigned his appointment as Acting Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court is correct.
We expect to hear by the next mail from Sydney that the Purchase of the Planet, paddle steamer, for our Local Steam Company, has been completed. "We have seen a letter from Sydney, stating that she is well up to the work expected of her; she will carry 30 tons under hatches, besides a large deck load in fine weather; her departure would take place as soon as she could be got ready for sea. The Liverpool and London Fire Insurance Company propose to send down to their agents in this province, Messrs. Cookson, Bowler, & Co., a fire engine, with all the necessary appurtenances. 'There are two powerful hand engines here already. It may not be generally known that a company has been for some time formed for carrying on a whale fishery from this port. Preparatory measures have proceeded so far as the purchase of a suitable vesspl in Sydney, which will be fitted out under the superintendence of Captain Gay, of Pigeon Bay, who has^ acted as "the agent of the parties concerned in her purchase, and who will also take command of her. The abundance of fish of? this coast during the past season, together with the experience and resources of those who form the company, lead us to expect every success for their enterprize. Sydney papers inform us that the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales, on, the 26th
ulk, passed a unanimous resolution urging the Government to proceed with the negotiations with the Royal Mail Company for opening the Panama steam route. His Excellency the Governor returned a most favourable reply.
