Youn* ; and Co. had laid on the fine ship Westminster to sail from London for this port direct, in the last week in September. She would brins? ! numerous and distinguished party of emigrants for this province. 6 M . The Eliezer left Sydney on Friday the 6th instant, at noon, with the wind from the NE She made Cape Farewell on the 13th, at day' light, and met a foul wind through the Straits She was off Cape Campbell on the following evening, Saturday the 14th, a strong SouthEaster blowing at the time, and anchored in Port Nicholson oh Sunday • remained there till the afternoon of the following day, and entered Port Cooper Heads on Wednesday morningtwelve days out. 8' The James Gibson, with Mr. Fitz Gerald late Superintendent of thia province, and family' on board, arrived in Sydney about the 20th of October. Mr. Fitz Gerald sailed for London in the Speedy, a fine ship of 1031 tons, on the Ist of November. The Queen of Perth, lately purchased and fitted for a whaling voyage, sailed from Sydney for Jacob's River, Otago, on the 29th ult. The schooner Corsair has been purchased in Sydney on^ behalf of several gentlemen of this place, and is intended to be fitted as a whaler and to cruise off this coast. She is a staunch teak built vessel of 134 tons register, and is now in the experienced hands' of Captain Gay, of Pigeon Bay. She sailed for Geelong with a general cargo on the 3rd inst., and would return to Sydney to be fitted out. ' The Spray sailed from Sydney, for Nelson and this port, on the 27th ult. The Gleaner for Wellington, New Zealand, sailed from Gravesend on July 29th, with a full cargo of 200 emigrants, despatched by Messrs. Morrison, Powell, and Co., under arrangement with the Provincial Government. The chief cabin passengers were Captain • Makosy and lady, and Mr. R. Pemberton and lady. Wilful Mis-eefoet of the Loss of the U.S. Whaling Baeque Pacific—We notice in a recent number of the " Nelson Examiner " that some of the crew of tlie whaling barque Pacific, of New^Bedford, Captain Sherman, had made a declaration to the resident magistrate of Collingwood, N. Z., to the effect that the vessel had loundered off the coast of New Zealand, on the night of the 121 st May. We are enabled to give a flat contradiction to the above, the Pacific having been in this Port since the date above mentioned.— Jßbbart Town Advertiser, October 28. The Eliza, from New Zealand, saw the schooner Lady Grey, about 200 miles eastward of the Heads from Sydney, bound to Auckland; and fell in with a quantity of wreck known to be that of the long missing Retriever, about 15 miles from Jacob's River.— Empire, Oct. 31. The November Mail.—Late as was the arrival of the European in Sydney, and crippled as was her machinery, very confident hopes have been expressed that she would be ready to leave again at her appointed time, and from the energetic manner in which the Australian Steam Navigation Company took up the repairs at their Pyrmont Establishment, sparing no expense and working night and day, there is every reason to believe the European would have been ready for sea some days before the Mth November, but unfortunately, whilst the crank shaft was in the lathe on Wednesday, afternoon, iij^ was found to be faulty, and by the advice of competent engineers called in by Mr. Larmour, has been condemned. This does, indeed, at first thought, seem very unfortunate, as the European cannot now be got ready in time; but it may be and probably is very fortunate that this defect has been found out before the crank was refitted, or we might have had a much move serious and anxious delay had it given away at sea. Under these circumstances, so disastrous to the European and Australian Royal Mail Company, we believe the public will be glad to learn that their favourite steamer the City ot Sydney has been chartered to take the place of the European, and will leave Sydney for Suez, with the English mail, on thellth November. The well-known Character of Captain Moodie, prudent, skilful, and persevering, and the fail* fame of his gailant] ship for speed and safety/ afford a reasonable* and confident expectation that the voyage will be performed within the contract time and in a manner every way creditable to her owners, as well as satisfactory to the charterers and the public.— lbid.
