MEETING AT AKAROA.

A meeting of the Electors of Akaroa was held on Friday evening: the 30th ulfc., at Henderson s Commercial Hotel. The meeting was convened for the purpose o£ presenting a requisition to A. E. White Esq for that gentleman to come forward to represent the Akaroa District at the ensuing clectlo" of members for the Provincial Council Mr. W. Henderson stated that he had be-n requested by a number of the electors who had signed the requisition to present it to Mr. White. He (Mr. Henderson) was sorry it had not been deputed to some one more capable than himself to present the requisition, but he could assure Mr. White that it was the earnest wish of the electors of Akaroa that he would allow yourself to be put in nomination. Mr. A. E. White said that after havin°- received so nattering a requisition he felt it his duty to respond to the wishes of the electors. He must congratulate the electors (not on his own account) that they had at last aroused themselves from the state of apathy into which they seemed to have fallen about Provincial politics. He was glad to see that the stigma which had been attached to Akaroa of beino- a kind of Consolation Stakes for beaten candidates (from other parts of the province) was likely to be removed^ Mr. White entered into a detail of the Provincial subjects which were likely to come forward at the next meeting of the Council. He (Mr. White^wished the electors to understand that he would not go to the Council as a mere delegate, but, when any money was proposed to be voted for Akaroa he should always study the - state of the Treasury; at the same time, he would endeavonrto get for Akaroa (what it never had received), its fair share of the public money to be expended on the necessary public works ! within the district.

A committee was appointed to carry out Mr. White's election.

We understand there were about sixty electors, names appended to the requisition.
