CHRISTCHURCH.

The polling day for the election of members of the Council for this town was Wednesday last. The announcement of the poll for the Superintendency on the same day drew together a good number of electors, and altogether the town was in a veiy fair degree of bustle. The following is the result of the poll as declared during the day :—

The last hour of the poll was father an exciting time. Messrs. Cass, Hart, and Prichard were running one another very close for the fourth seat, and sometimes one and sometimes another was a-head. Finally, Messrs. Cass and Hart drew somewhat in advance, and every exertion was made by the friends^ of both parties, polling man for man during the last quarter of an hour; and when the true state of the poll was declared outside, giving Mr. Cass a majority of one, great excitement prevailed. The Returning Officer, Mr. Duncan, went up to the town-hall to declare the election, when the returned members and the unsuccessful candidates returned thanks, each for the support he had received. We have no room for these addresses.
