PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS.
LYTTELTON AND PORT VICTORIA,
The nomination of candidates for the town of Lyttelton, and Port Victoria district, took place on Monday, at the Court House, Lyttelton. The Keturning Officer, having read the Governor's writ for the election of four members' to represent the town and port of Lytteltcn, with a few remarks as to the reduction of the; number of members from six to four, rendering care and judgment on the part of the electors more than ever obligatory to secure for Lyttelton her fair share of"weight and influence in the Council of the province, called upon the electors wishing to propose candidates for the present vacancies, now to avail themselves of that privilege, when Isaac Thomas Cookson was proposed by Mr. H. J. Le Cren, and seconded by Mr. F. Banks. Augustus James Alport, proposed by T. Gee, seconded by Mr. E. A. Hargreaves. Robert Waitt, proposed by Mr. A. Bayfield, seconded by Dr. M'Cheane.
Rowland Davis, proposed by Mr. J. T. Parkinson, and seconded by Mr. J. F. M'Cardell. Richard Turnbull, proposed by Mr. H. Allwright, seconded by Mr. John Grubb. Crosbie Ward, proposed by Mr. J. G. Fyfe, seconded by Mr. F. N. Campbell. Upon a show of hands, the numbers were declared to be in favour of Messrs. Cookson, Alport, Davis, and Waitt. A poll was then demanded on behalf of Messrs. Turnbull and Ward.
Messrs. Cookson, Davis, Alport, Waitt, and Turnbull then addressed the electors. Mr. Ward was not present, having been put in nomination in his absence at Akaroa, on an intimation being received that the electors in that district were determined to supplant him by the return of a candidate from their own district.
After a vote of thanks to Mr. R. Latter, the Returning Officer, the nomination of two candidates for the representation of the Port Victoria district was proceeded with. The Returning Officer, Mr. F. N. Campbell, having read the writ, two candidates presented themselves, Mr. Mark Sprott, proposed by Mr. Dampier, and seconded by Mr. Ashton; and Mr. J. G. Fyfe, proposed by Mr. Bayfield, and seconded by Mr. Parkinson. No other gentleman offering himself as a candidate, Messrs. Sprott and Fyfe were declared duly elected. After a vote of thanks to Mr. F. N. Campbell, for the impartial manner in which he had conducted his share of the day's business, the meeting separated. The polling for this town took place yesterday. The day was kept as a holiday, but no uproar occurred, the election being conducted with ihe utmost good-feeling and good humour throughout. We subjoin the state of the poll as it was declared during the day:—
The pelling continued pretty steady during the day, Mr. Davis being ahead until the last moment. Mr. Ward's arrival about 2 o'clock, with the result of the Akaroa election, caused ah accession of votes in his favour from that time forward, but not sufficient to change the position of the other candidates except that of Mr. Ttirn■bull. -Immediately after 4 o'clock, Mr. Latter declared the result of the poll to be in favour of Messrs. Cookson, Davis, Alport, and Waitt. .These gentlemen and the unsuccessful candidates addressed the electors, and the proceedings of the day closed with a cordial vote of thanks to the Returning Officer.
