WHEREAS a Writ, under,the hand of Thomas Gore Browne, Esquire, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief, in and over the Colony of New .Zealand, &c, bearing date the Fourteenth day c>f July, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fiftyseven, hath been directed to me," Thomas Rowley, Esquire, as Returning Officer for the Avon District, requiring and commanding me to causa to be elected by the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner and form by law prescribed, four legally qualified persons to serve as Members of the Provincial Council for the said Avon District. Now, therefore, I, the said Thomas Rowley, do hereby, in pursuance of the said recited writ, give notice that a public meeting of the electors of the Avon District will be held at Mr. Gregg's barn, Riccarton, on Thursday, the sth day of November next, at noon, for the purpose of nominating four persons to serve as Members of the Provincial Council for the said Avon District ; and, in the event of a poll being demanded for the candidates or any of them, such polling shall take place on Friday, the 6th day of No° vember, at the following polling places, viz:— At the School Room, Papanui, and at Mr. Gregg's Barn, Riccarton. ENTLEMEN,— Having- sat in the VX late Provincial Council as representative of the Christchurch Country District, and that large district being now divided according to the provisions of the Provincial Counj.cil Extension Ordinance, I have the honor to present myself to you as a candidate for the representation of the Avon District in the next Provincial Council of Canterbury. I have been induced to seek this honor at your han^s rather than from any other bpdy of Electors, because my interests are more immediately connected with your neighbourhood, and I am perhaps better known to you than in most of the other districts. Should you honor me with your confidence on this occasion, I shall endeavour, as heretofore,to advance the interests of the whole Province, and now especially those of the Avon District.
