The • nomination, of ) candidates for the SuperintenSeney passed off very quietly a CiiristchurclV on. Saturday. A detailed ac
count of the day's proceeding's will be found in another column. The official result is that Mr. Moorhouse is placed in a giiasi victorious position till the polling' day; and the actual result is, perhaps, nothing at all. # As the day of final decision approaches, a certain amount of interest is of course awakened. Committees sit, partisans canvass, and the street occasionally resounds with the name of a popular candidate. The election does not quite pass over in utter silence; and, spite of the absence of any policy or party watehjword, battle cry, or point at issue, the personal question is sufficiently interesting" to enlist the sympathies of a respectable body of electoi*s on both sides. '
• Though we congratulate the province on possessing a cool and calm manner in con-~ sidering the choice of a new. Superintendent, and thank the candidates and their agents for refraining from any attempt to take the votes of the constituency by storm, we are far from recommending indifference on the general question of choosing a Governor. If one from among ourselves is to be elevated to authority over us, we are far from cai*eless \ as to whether he shall be a knave or a fool; asking stork or a king* log-. Indifference as 'well as passion is unable to distinguish between good and bad. We are therefore pleased to observe, while we take no part in the contest, that the province at large is using its best judgment to distinguish ■between the merits or the individual candidates. If one of them must be our ruler for four years, it is a matter of no little interest to investigate the smallest differences which may create a preference. iFor ourselves, we act as umpire, and watch the game. Whichever side maybe \m } it will be our part to see fair play.
