I beg to solicit your suffrages j at the ensuing election. : I have hitherto abstained from addressing1 you, in the hope that some person more able to \ attend to your interests, and, perhaps, - more; fully possessing your confidence, would present \ himself to your notice, but as yet I am not: aware of any other candidate being in the field. ■ I have, therefore, at the request of several! friends, felt it my duty to ask your support, j Should you do me the honor to elect me, I shall; endeavour faithfully to discharge the duties of; your representative. ; I beg to remain, Gentlemen, ; Your obedient servant, ROBERT L. HIGGINS. TO THE ELECTORS OP ! THE HEATHCOTE DISTRICT. j r\ ENTLEMEN,—I beg to announce myself, as a candidate to represent you in the; | Provincial Council. Having had the honour of a seat in that Council since the extension of its numbers, as: one of the members for the Christchurch Countiy District, I may be permitted to refer you to my services during the. whole of that time, as the best testimony to my qualifications^ '• for the office. j My attendance in the Council and on com-: mittees, and my recorded votes will satisfy you* that I have never shrunk from at least the at-i tempt- faithfully to discharge my duties, and; they will also convince you that I have never: absented myself from my place in the Council, in order to evade recording my vote upon any measure which carried with it a clear exposition of my opinion. Should I have the honor to be re-elected, I promise you that I will endeavour to pursue the; same independent course; and that I -will to the best of my ability at all times zealously; i guard your interests. As it is not my intention to make a personal canvass, I beg to remind; you that the nomination is; fixed for the sthl November, at Christchurch Quay, and the poll-; ing for the day after (the 6th) at the same place,! and at Mr. Archer's on the Lower Lincoln! Road. i I have the honor to be, I Gentlemen, your obedient servant, ! J. OLLIVIER. ! TO THE ELECTORS OP ? THE AVON DISTRICT. HAVING represented the Christehureh Country District in the Provincial Council from the first election of that body, I now ofFeri myself as a candidate to represent you in the next Council, as I feel that I am more peculiarly! connected with the electors of the Avon District than with any other portion of my former constituency. In requesting your support upon the present occasion, I can only say that, should you. do me the honor to elect me, I shall, as I have hitherto ; done, endeavour to promote the interests of this district as well as of the Province at large.; My public conduct will be influenced now as formerly by a conviction that the duties of a Member of the Provincial Council consist in promoting practical improvements rather than in discussing political theories. I may refer to the discharge of my. duties as Speaker of the late -Council as a guarantee for due attention to the business which may be entrusted to me as your representative.
