Gentlemen, —On my return from Wellington^ I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of the above requisition; and I beg to return you my sincere thanks for the flattering manner in which you have requested me to come forward as one of your representatives in the ensuing Provincial Council of this Province. As I am largely interested in the prosperity of your town and district both individually and indirectly, I should have felt it my duty to have accepted your invitation had I been on the spot at the time. I am glad, however, to observe that you have as candidates three gentlemen, residents in the place, who I feel are more entitled to your suffrages from long residence and local experience than myself, and I therefore most respectfully decline coming forward at the present time.
