QJSNTLEMEN,— The dissolution of VJT the Provincial Council having been proclaimed, and the recent notices in the local papers from the different Returning Officers of this province having notified that after the election of the Superintendent 1 the Electors of. Canterbury will be called upon to choose representatives for the new Council, having been requested by numerous friends to come forward as a candidate at the'next election for the Kaiapoi District, I have consented to do so, and now solicit the honor of your votes. * This being the first time that you have had the privilege of exercising your right of returning a member for ;this district, should you do me .the honor to return me as one of your representatives, I pledge myself to use my utmost endeavours to advance the interests of this province, and of the rapidly growing and flourishing district of Kaiapoi in particular. As to my political opinions, I can hardly state them in so short a space as an address of this nature must of necessity occupy. *I hope, however, to have the pleasure of meeting you at an early opportunity, when I can state my views on the subject more fully. TO THE ELECTORS OP THE HEATHCOTE DISTRICT. rjENTLEMEN,—I beg to announce myself vX as a candidate to represent you in' the Provincial Council. J Having had the honour of a seat in that Council since the extension of its numbers, as ' one of the members for the Christchurch I Country District, I may be permitted to refer you to my services during the whole of that time, as the best testimony to my qualifications • for the office. My attendance in the Council and on committees, and my recorded votes will satisfy you that I have never shrunk from at least the attempt faithfully to discharge my duties, and they will also convince you that I have never absented myself from my place in the Council, in order to evade recording my vote upon any measure which carxied with it a clear exposition of my opinion. Should I have the honor to be re-elected, I promise you that I will endeavour to pursue the same independent course; and that I will to the best of my ability at all times zealously guard your interests. As it is not my intention to make a personal canvass, I beg toTemind you that the nomination is fixed for the sth Novemhei", at Christchurch Quay, and the polling for the day after (the 6th) at the same place, and at Mr. Archer's on the Lower Lincoln Road. WHEREAS a Writ, under the hand of Thomas Gore Browne, Esquire, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commandev-in-Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand, &c, &c, beai'ing date the Fourteenth day pf July, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven, hath been directed to me, James Townsend, jun., as Returning Officer for the Ashley District, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected by the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner and form by law prescribed, one legally qualified person to serve as Member of the said Provincial Council for the Ashley District. Now, therefore, I, the said James Townsend, jun., Returning Officer for the said Ashley District, do hereby, in pursuance of the said recited Writ, give notice that a public meeting of the, electors of the said Ashley District will be holden at Mr. Torlesse's Woolshed, Fernside, Mairaki -Downs, on Monday the 2nd day of November next, at noon, for the purpose: of nominating one person to serve as Member of the Provincial Council for the said Ashley District ; and in the event of a poll being demanded for the candidates or any of them, such polling shall take place on Tuesday the 3rd day of November next, at Mr. Torlesse's Woolshed, at Fernside, Mairaki Downs, and at the Woolshed, Teviotdale.
