The Lyttelton Times.
Wednesday, September 23. The arrival of the English malt of July '» time when our columns were already ta. lcep,^ with the report of last Friday's, meeting '• left us no room for news of minor import^ nc ■.. The English news is:not remarkable excep; , the rapidity of its transit. The in Wellington by the Marchiones^ i°. 6* "2L | and in Lyttelfcon on the 66th day from Itpv*
3fr. James Smith had arrived in Wellington by the Marchioness, having left London'with the mail. The manager of the Oriental Bank in Wellington (Mr. Barnes) had also arrived. The non : amval of the May tnail from Australia caused great disappointment at home. Several sailing vessels and steamers from Sydney and Melbourne were still out, some time over-due. It appear* that the Oneida had been condemned by the Government Surveyor before leaving England, and the conduct of the Company in sending her out in such a state is freely blamed. The Melpomene had arrived from New Zealand on the 6th July. The Bosworth was to sail for Canterbury and Otago, probably on the 31st July; and the Union from Liverpool for Wellington. Money was reported easier, and bank rates were expected to fall to oh. Consols had declined 1 per cent. The Ministry of South Australia was defeated in the house on the 29th August, resigned, and a.new Ministry was : in the process of formation. The New South Wales Ministry was defeated on. v two secondary measure's on the same day (tfifi 29th August) and resigned, adjourning the Parliament. The next step.was uncertain.. We give elsewhere a narrative of two disastrous shipwrecks on the Australian coast. Other colonial and general news we must reserve for a future issue.
