The Emu was built in 1850, at Brisbane Water, of Blue Gum, is 32| tons, N. M., and will carry 50 tons dead weight, is coppered, and copper fastened; her length is 49 :feet, breadth amidships 14 feet and 6-tenths, depth of hold 6 feet. FITZ GERALD'S Departure for England many persons have thought that a fitting time has arrived for giving some marked and permanent expression to the feelings \vith which his labours in this settlement are very generally regarded. : From the first formation of the Canterbury Association's scheme, in England to the. present time, Mr. Fitz Gerald's i whole energies and talents have been devoted.to the service.of this, settlement at the expense ,both of health and private interests, and with a singleness or purpose which even those, who differ from him on many points have fully -appreciated. As an officer of the Association—as a member of the General Assembly—as,,the leader of the first Responsible Government of New Zealand— abo_ve all, as Superintendent of. Canterbury, he has been largely instrumental in procuring for this province a reputation and a position beyond the expectations of its most sanguine ■ wellwishers ; and, after initiating amidgreat difficulties the new order, of Government consequent upon the Constitution Act of 1852, he is returning to_ England with broken health'to work still for this settlement.
