tion be set on foot to enable those who appreciate Mr. Fitz Gerald's services to present him with some valuable proof of such appreciation ; and a committee was appointed to carry out the wishes of the meeting. In addressing this circular to their fellowcolonists, the committee wish specially to express the feelmgof the meeting that the course now adopted should be exceptional, and should on no account be looked upon as a precedent. It is not because Mr. Fitz Gerald was Superintendent, or even our first Superintendent,—it is not merely because he has scrupulously done his duty in the highest office of our little state, that it is proposed to give him a permanent testimonial of the respect and gratitude of his fellow-colonists, but it is in commemoration of services which are not likely to be equalled for a long time to come.
