As an officer of the Association-—as a member of th General Assembly—as the leader of the fir t Responsible Government of New Zealand above all, as Superintendent of Canterbury h has been largely instrumental in procuring f or this province a reputation and a position beyond the expectations of its most sanguine well wishers; and, after initiating amid great difficulties the new order of Government consequent upon the Constitution Act of 1852, he is re turning to England with broken health to work still for this settlement. Under these circumstances, at an influential meeting held at the Royal Hotel, Christchurch on the 25th ult., it was resolved that a subscription be set on foot to enable those who appreciate Mr. Fitz Gerald's services to present him with some valuable proof of such appreciation * and a committee was appointed to carry out the wishes of the meeting. In addressing this circular to their fellowcolonists, the committee wish specially to express the feeling of the meeting that the course S» now adopted should be exceptional, and should on no account be looked upon as a precedent. It is not because Mr. Fitz Gerald was Superintendent, or even our first Superintendent,— it is not merely because he has scrupulously done his duty in the highest office of our little state, that it is proposed to give him a permanent testimonial of the respect and gratitude of his fellow-colonists, but it is in commemoration of services which are not likely to be equalled for a long time to come.
