The Southerly Passage from Sydney. —Referring to the New Zealand Pilot, the last authenticated work on the subject, with reference to the route from Sydney to-this port by Foveaux Straits, we find it there stated that, as westerly winds prevail there with a strong souther]}1' current at all seasons of the year, it is not advisable for sailing vessels coming from the eastward to attempt the passage. This points out that through Cook Straits is the best course for the voyage from this port to Sydney, and that the southerly route would be available for the return voyage at all periods of the year, were it not for the northerly winds which prevail on the coast between this port and Otago during the summer months.
