LOCAL STEAMEES. | TO THE FLOCKOWNERS, AND OTHEE INHABITANTS OP CANTERBURY, INTEEESTED IN HAVING LOCAL STEAMEES. r^i ENTLEMEN,—With'referenceto the \JT ) .ocal Steam Service for which we have entered into a contract with the Provincial Government, our particular desire is, if possible, to adopt a plan that will give general satisfaction, and work for the benefit of all parties concerned; we have every confidence in being able to carry out the plan already before the public, but, as the Insurance notes issued by Provincial Government have, in some instances, been objected to, we are desirous of giving the inhabitants of the colony an opportunity of joining in a different plan to the one already proposed, if we can thereby give more general satisfaction. We purpose therefore to form a Company for working the steamers, instead of the plan which is in course of being carried out ; and we will give the Company the benefit of the bonus which the Provincial Government has engaged to pay to ourselves. The Company would also receive the premium of insurance from the Provincial Government. As originally intended, we still purpose obtaining the steamers from England in order to insure having thoroughly suitable boats, with machinery by the best makers, as perfect as possible in every respect. A temporary steamer can, however, be obtained from Melbourne or Sydney, in the course of a few months, to be used until the better steamers arrive from England; it can then be sold, or kept as a reserve boat to use in busy times. v , We remain, Gentlemen, Your very obedient servants, Pee peo MILES, KINGTON & CO.
