To the Editor of the Lyitelton Times. Sir, —Permit me, Mr. Editor, to call your attention to the impolicy and folly of people writing such letters as that by " A Subscriber" on the Local Steam Service. As a resident in the Colony, I protest against having the bar at the mouth of the Heathcote made to appear as dangerous as your subscriber has represented it "to be. When due care is taken/there is no danger to be feared. A letter in your paper of yesterday's date places the risk in its true light; if there has not been a vessel lost on the bar, out of the numerous craft constantly crossing it, there cannot be much danger. Such letters as that written by your subscriber do an immense amount of injury to the colony; that account will be singled out, by the underwriters in England and Australia and be used as a handle to extort high rates of premium on vessels trading here. In consequence of such letters, vessels coming to the province are charged excessively high rates for premium of Insurance, higher than to any of the neighbouring provinces. In reality, this is the safest province for vessels to came to, but such letters as your ' Subscriber's ' have given the place " a bad name " when it ought to have a very good one. A COLONIST. Lyttelton, July 16th, 1857.
