Local Intelligence.
We have undoubtedly to congratulate ourselves upon the timely alteration in size and shape of the ' Lyttelton Times.' Besides .certain practical conveniences to ourselves, our readers and subscribers have a largely increased amount of reading matter provided for them, a requisite which we are free to confess had been greatly in demand for a few months past. But it is with the advertising public that the change appeals to be in greatest favour, the clear proof of which favour lies in the remarkably increased number of advertisements which have been sent to us for insertion since the first of July. We need only say that the same number of advertisements, if inserted in the ' Lyttelton Times' as formerly published, would not have left half a column of room for reading matter, The increase of advertisements is one of the surest marks of the progress of the community. Looked at in this light, the advance of Canterbury during late years has been particularly marked. Our publication of Saturday last icontained almost exactly double the number of advertisements published in that of the corresponding date of last year, and about three times as many as that of the year previous. This is i very appreciable symptom of the increase of ausmess in Canterbury. j In Lyttelton we have to notice one or two improvements in, the town. The Union Bank iuilding is rising gradually and has reached fhat point when the style of architecture begins to be apparent to the eye. The ornamental part of the outer structure has been executed with a very happy effect. Then there is the Gaol. The yard is being enclosed with a high and strong palisade which will add to the actual security of the prison as well as to the gaol-like effect. We understand that a row of barrack buildings ; will be erected between the gaol and the street, i Then the erection of the public pumps has been j commenced, at' what we are told is a very 1 moderate expense. The pumps at present I placed are over the wells hitherto used, \ the water in which will be thus preserved clean. The next job will be to provide water tin the deficient localities of the town. The use Jof these pumps and wells for the health and ] comfort of the people of Lyttelton we have before spoken of. Their equally important use, in ■case of fire, for the preservation of property, we shall take occasion to allude to at a future time, Mi connection with a movement now in agitation jpr providing the town with the appliances of ye-engine, &c. |We have been requested to mention, having omitted to do so at the time, that in a Gazette published about a month ago, Messrs. C. W. ■turner and C. Ward were appointed additional trfwtees of the Lyttelton Savings Bank. We are enabled to say that the appointment of | Resident Magistrate at Timaru has been oim-ed to, and we believe accepted by Mr. Woolcoabe, R.N. This appointment will take with it those of Pilot arid Sub-Collector of Customs at 'hat port, the recommendations for which aye -Orwarded to the General Government. Tomorrow night, the first Theatre in Canlerbury will open under the management of Mr. ■ > • 4. Foley, who has always found himself a Wessful caterer to the public amusement. In °P advertising columns will be found the proSpinuie of thp evening's entertainment, which, as * tlu first of 1 the kind in-Canterbury, will form '^jniarled er, in our social history.
