The Lyttelton Times. Saturday, April 11th.
It is a sad story w« copy to-day irora the Wellington papers. The tale is so easily read and i(s moral so apparent that it needs no comment, from us. The first two ships of-the Black Ball Line to New Zealand went out of harbour as the third ship came in. They were all under' charter to convey emigrants from [Liverpool to New Zeaand. But what a contrast, what an abrupt descent from the first tb;the third ! The -Oliver Lang feted and cheered from Liverpool to New Zealand and back again, the ,and pride of' her1 owners 'and all. concerned with her; the Ann Wilson, that wretched ship, where neglect or knavery brecl misery and death, James Baines and Co. i might,it was said at the, time, lose money by \ the Oliver Lang's trip, but they gained a great reputation among us; they have.now, no doubt, arranged to make money but t they have lost their credit.' We hope the Wellington Government had not completed their contract with Baines and Co., or that they, had made it with fstfingent provisions. Ii is a warning to us and to other provinces!, in dealing, with the subject, not to,. be led away by an apparent profit in the -business of emigration, which may become an actual loss by the discomfort, disease and death of those who trust themselves to us.
