The Lyttelton Times.

Wednesday, March 4ibJi. In the bustle of trade politics are' flat and almost wholly uncared for. Lytfelton has never been so busy with the work of importing and exportine, since its foundation, as in the past month of February. The loading of the Oliver Lang, and the discharging of the unusual number of foreisn and coasting vessels which have hiousrht supplies to our market have kept the place in continual bustle. All the stores are full. The bonded warehouses are overflowing with liquids and we must exprct a long quiet time for distribution and consumption. Meanwhile the reverse is the condition of our small political world. Though every one" knows that an exciting time is coming, no one seems to think that his neighbour knows it too. Perhaps when our boatmen are unemployed, our carters idle, and our storekeepers at leisure, we may begin to bestir ourselves in the expensive amusement of elections and party squabbles. For our part we cannot but hope that business occupations may be so engrossing as to cause a continuance of political lethargy for the remaining ten months of the year. Moneymaking and bard work are the best antidote to the poison of party spirit. We desire to warn those who may be disposed to take a part in any contest to beware how they act. It is not much too early now to srive a caution, and we earnestly entreat every man, whether he be an elector or a candidate for any office to set his face from the fir«t and throughout against those- practices which in election times are apt to be carried to extremes, and cannot fail to degrade a constituency, disgrace the candidates.and falsify the whole system of representation.
