The Canterbury coals are now 'eqiial in quality to the Newcastle Ico'als. ' ' CHRIST'S COLLEGE, CANTERBURY, THE following Scholarships,hi connexion with Christ's College, are at present vacant. 1. The Dudley Divinity Scholarship, present value about £10 per annum; open to all members of the' United Church of. England and Ireland, between the ages of -18 and 25 inclusive, declaring themselves desirous of studying Divinity. The value of this Scholarship is likely soon to increase. .., 2. The Rowley Scholarship, present value about £12 per annum, open to all members of the United Church of England and:. Ireland, between the ages of 15 and 20 inclusive. ■' 3. The Buller and Eeay Scholarship, present value about £15 per annum, open to the same ' as the preceding. If three competent Candidates should' not present themselves, r any two of the above Scholarships may be' held- together, subject to the rules respecting, age. Each" Scholarship is tenable for three years, subject to the power of the Warden and Fellows to remove,a Scholar at any time, incase of misconduct. , ■ Candidates are to apply personally, or by letter, before the 25th March next, to the Rev. H. Jacobs, M.A., Sub-Warden of Christ's College, Christchurch, and; if'not'resident in the Province, they • are required' to• send certificates of their being members of the United Church of England and-Ireland, and, if possible, Certificatesof Baptism, together with Testimonials of Character. They mustalso declare themselves ready to conform to the rules'-of-the College, and to attend such • course of' instructions as shall be required of them during the College terms. The minimum of previous- proficiency required will be some' knowledge 'of Latin, of Arithmetic, of Ancient and Modern1 History, Scripture History, and Geography.' "WILSON. ■ - NOTICE: ' THE Provincial Government are prepared to receive Tenders from persons willing to engage in the construction of roads or other Public Works, arid to receive'pay- ' ment in land, under the "43rd" clause ~of the Waste Land Regulations now in force. 2. Every tender must contain a- specification of the Public Work which it is proposed to construct, and the sum in money for which the contractor is willing to .undertake .it, and the time within which it is to be completed. 3. Every Tender must also contain a careful description of the portion of, land which the contractor desires to receive. in payment for such work. ... 4. No Tender will be accepted on, which the quantity of land applied' for exceeds one acre for every Two Pounds Sterling of the value of the work to be. done. 5. No Tender will be accepted except on the written certificate of' the Provincial Engineer, that the work proposed to be done is of public benefit, and is bona fide worth the sum specified in the Tender. 6. As soon as any Tender shall 'be accepted by the Government, the land applied for will be reserved from sale until 'the, completion of the work.
