OTAGO.
We have no papers by the mail or otherwise per Mariner, but two numbers of the '.Otago Colonist' have been handed to-us by the kindness of Mr. Latter, to whom they came .-through the post. We observe that this paper, though.commencing wit'i a declared determination to record local rU%tters as they should be recorded, finds already a want of either means or materials, ftnd is fain to fill its space with second-hand matter. We however find the following :—• Surveys.-—We are glad to find that the Waste Land Board has decided upon a chronometrical(?)surve i ypfthecountry, e ?pecially with a view to apportion and decide upon the numerous applications for sheep runs. At present, it is difficult, if not impossible, to come;to any intelligent decision upon these' matters, a great portion of the country having been applied for by parties, many of whom have never seen it themselves, and the extent of the application being entirely guess-work. We anticipate great benefit from the survey in question; as it will enable the Board to enforce the pasture regulations, and prevent the mere paper applicant from holding the country against the man who is prepared to stock it. The chief surveyor has commenced the survey at the southward.— Jan. 16. The brig Content, Robertson, arrived at the Bluff on the 23rd December, after a passage of 16 days from Newcastle. She experienced very severe weather, but landed her sheep in good condition, and with little loss. She sailed again on the 30fch December for Sydney. _ We regret to learn that the. schooner Endeavour has'gone ashore on the sand-spit, at -the mouth of the Clutha r'ver, and has become a total wreck. Most of her cargo has been saved, but greatly damaged. This little craft vas' the pioneer of" our country fleet. She was ofnedby Messrs. Macandrew and Co., and was Uninsured. Mails.— We understand that Mr. David Hutchison's offer to convy the mails between Bunedin and Waitangi River, .at the *"ate of £290 per annum, and Mr. John Graham's offer to convey them between Duneilin and Invereargill, at the ra'e of £-'00 per a-mum, have been accepted. It is intended that the first mail should start from Dunedin to Waitangi 'River, i and also from Dunedin to Invercargill, on Monday, the 2nd February next, and on every alternate Monday thereafter. From-a statement of Exports, Imports, and R venue for 1856, we find that compared with 1855, the figures are : 1855 1856 1mp0rt5...... £44.545 11 0 £50,539 H 0 I Exports...... 24.182 15 0 26,122 15 0 I T>...~v~ .. 4375 11 0 5,257 15 6
