CHRIST'S COLLEGE, CANTERBURY. AN adjourned meeting of the Governing Body of the College will be held in the Grammar School, Christchurch, on Monday next, the 2nd February, at 7 p.m. HENRY JACOBS, . Sub-Warden. Christchurch, Jan. 26, 1857. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CHRISTCHURCH COUNTRY • DISTRICT. f± ENTLEMEN,—The result of this VXclay's Election will have taken you by surprise as much as it has done myself. I attended with my friends at the 'Government Office,. expecting, in common with them, that the nomination was fixed, as it has generally been, for Noon. I attach no blame to the Returning Officer for this alteration, as I should natuially be referred to the advertisement; I may, however, express my astonishment at this departure from the usual hour. Notwithstanding my absence, two friends stood forth to propose and second mo; and, the show of hands being in favour of Mr. Bray, my friends demanded a poll on my behalf, but this was refused because there were not six electors present to support the application. It seems there is a clause in the Act, of which I was ignorant, that in the absence of a Candidate a poll must be demanded by that number. I deeply regret this mistake, but as in a short time you will be again appealed to, I shall then have the honour of again presenting myself to your notice, when I hope to insure your support, and to be placed.in that position which, but for this unlooked for incident, I should have occupied on the present occasion. I am, Gentlemen, Yours obediently, JOHN SHAND. Avon Lodge, Jan. 29, 1857. • TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CHRISTCHURCH COUNTRY DISTRICT. (""1 ENTLEMEN—I beg to return yen JT my sincere thanks for the cordial support I have met with during my recent canvass ; and although your attendance! at the poll was rendered unnecessary from my having been returned by a show of hands at the nomination, I am not the less gratified and honoured by the many assurances of confidence I have met with.
