WELLINGTON.
The tendency of the past weelc or two having been rather towards holiday-making than trasiness, our reports are necessarily meagre. No arrivals of any importance have taken place, and we have only to notice the intended departures (this day) of the Mariner, in pi'osecution of her voyage to Otago and Lyttelton, and the William Alfred, to Sydney, with a full cargo, principally of wool. We repeat our regrets that direct ships do not get the benefit of the homeward cargoes, as this must tell very prejudicially on outward freights, but at the same time we do not wish to insinuate blame to any one; our merchants are right in seeking the readiest and earliest means of transit, while the route by wh'ch our produce is now conveyed tends mate x My to sustain frequent communications with Sydney by lines of vessels belonging to this port, an advantage which, to some considerable extent, neutralizes the disadvantages to which we have referred. A lot of Port Cooper cheese, damaged, has been sold ai 8-kl. per ft.
It would be premature as yet to speculate on the prospects of the opuning year, but with the increased quantity of wool that will be obtained, and the remunerative prices that may be looked for, it is not extravagant to hope that we are approaching better times than those we have recently experienced.— Spectator, Jan. 3.
