The Lyttelton Times

Wednesday, January \4>th. By the Canterbury and Mary Thompson we have intelligence from Wellington to the 7th instant, from Wanganui to the Ist inst., and from Auckland to the 13th December. Extracts from these papers will be found in another column. Our dates from Sydney are to the 23rd of December (10 days later than those from Auckland), from Melbourne to the I 9th, and from Adelaide to the 13th of the same month. We have no later English intelligence, but find in the Australian papers details of the news conveyed to Melbourne per Royal Charter. The Jane Peata, which arrived this morning, brings a file of Otago papers. In the 'Witness' of the 10th instant it is stated that the remains of Dr. Schmidt had been discovered in the bush at Waikoua by some natives. The Editor remarks :— " The information which has reached us is very scanty, but it would appear as if the unfortunate man had endeavoured to retrace his steps, and had so nearly succeeded that he was within a mile of the edge of the bush when he died. It is said that the body was not much decayed, which, if a fact, is very surprising, inasmuch as it is nearly two vears since Dr. Schmidt was lost."
