Province of Canterbury to wit:—« WHEREAS a Writ under the hand of James Edward Fitz Gerald, Esq., Superintendent of the said Province, bearing date the 4th day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six, hath been directed to me, Charles Christopher Bowen, Esq., as Returning officer for the Christchurch Country District, in the said Province, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected, by and from amongst the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in form and manner by law prescribed, One Person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District, in the place of John Hall, Esq., resigned; NOW therefore, I, the said Charles Christopher Bowen, Esq., Returning-officer for the Christchurch Country District do hereby in pursuance of the said recited writ, give notice that a public meeting of the electors of the Christchurch Country District, will be holden at the offices of the Provincial Government in the town of Christchurch, on Monday, the 22nd day of December, inst., at 11 o'clock, a.m., for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council, for the Clmstchurck Country District, and in the event of a poll being demanded for the candidates or any of them, such polling shall take place on Tuesday, the 23rd day of December, in the lobby of the Provincial Council Chamber, at Christchurch ; in the Police office at Lyttelton; and at Mr. Black's Store, Kaiapoi. WHEREAS it has been represented to the Commissioners of the Waste Lands BoarcF. that parties are unlawfully cutting timber on Banks' Peninsula, Talbot and Harewood forests, and other parts of the province, NOTICE is hereby given, that any person found ''cutting timber on any of the Waste lands ofthe Crown, without a license "previously obtained*, from this Board, will be proceeded against in pursuance of the Regulations now hi force within this province. A SALE of Town Lands in the above towns, will take place at the Land Office at Christchurch, at noon, on Monday, the 19th January, 1557, Maps of both Towns ntav be seen at the Land Office. A map of the town of Akaroa may also be seen on application to the Resident Magistrate at Akaroa, after the first of December next. A map of the Town of Timaru may also be seen at the Survey Office, Talbot Forest. Persons wishing to have sections put up to auction on the above day must apply to the Waste Lauds Board, on or before the 29th December, 1556, and pay to the Treasurer a Deposit of 10 per cent, of the upset price.
