■July 25th. mails to the cape. In answer to Mr. H. Berkeley, Mr. Wilson said a tender had been accepted by the Government for £28.000 for the conveyance of mails to the Cape, and £40,000. including the Ma\mtius and Indian services. The service would commence in August. The tender was for five years. THE AtJSTBXLIAX CO>~TBACT. In reply to Mr. H. G. Laugton, Mr. Wilson said the Government did not provide any test of the speed of the vessels for the mails to Australia tinder the recent contract, as they considered that a sufficient test was provided for the accomplishment of the service within the specified time by the heavy penalties set forth in the contract The Government had power at anytime to put an end to the contract if they were dissatisfied.
