The Lyttelton Times. Wednesday, October 15th.
The Provincial Council meets to-morrow. We have no exact information about the subject of their labours ; but from rumours and indirect sources we gather that the first object ofjhe Executive is to ask for power to raise a la;^v for the construction and repairs of roads ; and secondly, to submit a scheme for the formation of a horse tramway between Ly Helton and Christchurch, which we are told, is not to take away one shilling from the revenues of the province. Of course, without more accurate data, we shall
not enter upon a criticism of either proposition. When the Council meets no doubt, the first step of the Government will be to put before members, and so before the public, the details of all the plans contemplated ; and, so far as we are informed, these are so interesting and so open for discussion l^y everybody, that each individual, bolh of tile Council and of the public, can and will form his own opinion about them, We shall now only take occasion to remind the members of the Council that the details of finance and public works are exactly the points which it is their duty to investigate closely, that now is the opportunity'for doing so ; and that on a matter of such importance, only the most careful consideration will, satisfy the public. The plans of the Government are, no doubt, carefully propared and calculated to elicit nppioval at first sight: but nothing ought to be taken for granted. We see no -reason for, l>»t many against a hurried session, when^ such questions are under consideration.
