When you requested me to assume that post, I did so, stating my intention to return to England after the close of the session. lam under the necessity now of returning, and I have deemed it best to avoid the risk of leaving you unrepresented at the next meeting of the General Assembly. The main object for which you wished me to be present in the Assembly in the late session has, I trust, been, in great part, accomplished. The financial affairs of the Colony are at all events in a train for settlement, and I am about to return to England, partly with the view of completing that settlement. In thus terminating our political connection, I desire to acknowledge gratefully the confidence you have reposed in me politically, and the personal kindness which I have experienced at your hands; and to assure you of the sincere and abiding interest which I shall always feel in whatever concerns the welfare of the Canter-, bury Settlement.
