Local Intelligence.

We see hy a Provincial Government Gazette, bearing date the 25th inst., that the Provincial Council is to be called together on the lOfch of October. The object of this session is said to be to provide powers for raising money by loan for public works;-'

The same gazette contains the appointment of a differently constituted Land Board. Yf • Gr. Brittan Esq. to beCluef Commissioner; -J. Brittan and C. C. Bowen Esqrs. to be commissioners, the latter to be Treasxii _.r; C. B. Fooks Esq^ to be Secretary1 to the board, Mr. Cass remains a Commissioner as before, "W. G. Brittan Esq. is also gazetted as a .Resident Magistrate, and is, Aye believe, to perform the dtities of that of lice iii Christchurch and Kaiapoi. The duties of clerk to the bench are to bo performed by Mr. Fooks.

" An announcement follows- that a new writ is issued for the Election of a member in the Provincial Council:for the town of' Christchurch; a seat being vacant -by the resignation of' Mr.

Fooks to accept the above appomtments. An address in our advertising columns shows that Mr. Pooks offers himself for re-election. The nomination is to take place on the 13th October, and the polling, if any, on the 15th. Among all these elections it strikes us that the new roll must be much wanted. Candidates, new electors, and returning officers, will all feel at a loss without it. The roll, composed last April, arid'revised in July, should surely'be published by this time; Where is it? and, if not published, will it be in force at the time of the election ?

At about half-past 3, p.m., on Wednesday, the prisoner Ronnage, who was committed to gaol on suspicion of assault and robbery on the highway, and whose violent conduct iii gaol has necessitated'his being heavily ironed, managed to saw through his irons with a knife, and took an .opportunity of attempting his escape from the gaol yard, when the gaofer's back was turned for a moment. The gaoler, however, pursued .the prisoner and retook him, up in the gully above the gaol. We .understand that this is the second time that Eonnage has managed to saw through his irons with apparently' inadequate means.
